NATURAL HABITAT

“NATURAL HABITAT” series was first exhibited in public in March 2022 at POLU GALLERY. It is a developing series.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
“Natural Habitat” series is a concept I’ve been toying with for the past few years. What does it mean to me? Where is it? What is the concept of “home”?

I’ve done quite a lot of moving from place to place in my upbringing. Although immensely grateful for that experience now as an adult, I found myself wondering what it feels like to have that “home” that remains unaffected through generations. The concept of natural habitat where one makes its home fascinates me. Where it meets all the environmental and mental conditions for its needs to survive. Then I thought to myself - my natural habitat is wherever my family is.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve lived in once place. All that matters to me is that my family is there. That’s where I’m from. That is my natural habitat where it supplies me with everything I need to survive. Family and hugs. And noodles.

Then I also thought to myself: What would happen if I switch around one natural habitat with another? What if the reef fish swam through the atmosphere, feasting on red ginger? What if the beautiful Hawaiian quilt patterns naturally adorned the skies? Why not live and dive off of the ti leaves? Heck, for that matter, let’s check out the surf overlooking what looks like an un-surf-able cityscape. Maybe there is a break out there that they can only see.

Now, let me ask you this: Where is your natural habitat?
